Baked Clay
Urartu

This architectural plaque is painted on a baked clay surface. Such plaques were used to decorate buildings. Typical for the Urartian culture is this composite imaginary birdlike creature with human head and legs. Fantastic creatures were thought to give protection from harm and bring good fortune.
